A Christmas Eve Poem

Then as we have read –
and as we have heard,
it’s what God has said,
from beginning, The WORD

God said “light,” there was light.
and God said, “That’s good!”
said “Day and then Night”
and boom, there they stood.

God said, “Sky!” and the waters divided,
the heavens above and the rain it provided,
an order established as God had decided.

And God said to waters, “Be gathered together,
I need some dry ground for trees, flowers, heather.
Some watery clouds to drift through the sky,
let land appear, some wet and some dry.”

The earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed
and the tree yielding fruit, and the flowering weed.
And God took a pause, and saw it as good,
God liked the savannahs, the mountains and woods.

Then God said, “Let lights in the heavens declare
the days and the nights, let their cycles prepare
a standard for seasons, for days, and for years,
the sun and the moon,” the grand glowing spheres.

And God said, “Let waters bring forth all the fish,
the whale, the clam,” all things that go swish.
“Let the birds fly above the seas and the land!”
God saw it was good so continued the plan.

And God said, “Bring species
and creatures each kind,
all the cattle, and beasties,”
sort of forcing the rhyme.

Then God’s grand opinion,
“Make People like me,
and grant them dominion
over land and the sea.”

God saw it all good,
every shape, every gender
and as humans stood
God said, “This you remember:

My Word merely spoken
made it all from beginning,
I give it unbroken,
for your joy to start tending.”

God looked in our eyes,
as we looked above,
to God’s deep surprise
right then, God made love.

So startled was God
by this feeling afresh,
it may seem quite odd,
but God’s Word became flesh.

And so, this great God who made all habitation,
suddenly planned a grand incarnation.

So, we in this world would not be forgotten,
but find God’s great love in a babe’s flesh, begotten.

So, when you feel small
or you think you’re unwise,
consider it all
as seen through God’s eyes.

When tired of your day
and trivial stuff,
remember the way
God says, “You’re enough!”

The Word became flesh,
we all know the story –
consider the creche
and know God’s great glory.
