Four-Day Stay at a Michigan Lake Home

courtesy of Allyson Metcalf and Brian Tennison

This home in southwest Michigan is 100 miles away from La Grange, in the Orchard on the Lake community, 15 minutes from Three Oaks and Sawyer. OTL is a beautiful, year-round community. The working orchard is scattered around a 130-acre property with a pristinely clean, spring-fed lake at its center, surrounded by a nature trail and woods. During summer and early fall, the pool overlooking the lake is a central attraction. There are paddle boards and kayaks available for lake use, and autumn brings a stunning color display. The area is very popular for cycling; and sledding, snowshoeing and cross country skiing in winter.

The house has 3 bedrooms, sleeping a total of 8, and 2 baths. The primary bedroom has a king size bed and en suite bath with shower. The second bedroom has a queen bed and extremely comfortable, convertible queen-sized futon sofa, and the third bedroom is furnished with a queen bed. The centerpiece of the home is a 47' kitchen/living/dining room with a Viking range and all cooking amenities; the dining table seats 10. The screen porch runs the length of the house and leads onto a deck of the same size overlooking the wooded area and lake.

Excellent nearby dining and drinking options include Greenbush Brewery and Susan’s in Sawyer, Journeyman Distillery, the Featherbone Restaurant and Froelichs in Three Oaks, and River St. Joe’s in Buchanan.

Collection of Agatha Christie Books and Mystery Games

She loved a mystery.

Dani Krogh’s favorite literary genre was mystery, and her favorite mystery author was Agatha Christie. From 1983 to 2000, Bantam Books published a series of 81 of Christie’s murder mysteries in a commemorative set. The books are leatherette hardcover boards with gold-lettered titles on the spine and a uniform silhouette of Christie and the series title on the front cover.

The color of the boards is called “Sussex Blue”, which is a very dark navy that often looks black in certain lighting. The decorative endpapers for each volume were designed by Peggy Skycraft with book design by Barbara N. Cohen. Available for auction are 52 of these volumes from Dani’s personal collection. That’s one great mysterious murder mystery each week for a full year!

Additionally, the collection up for bid includes 14 mystery games. Dani subscribed to the publisher’s offerings, but unfortunately her cancer diagnosis meant she lost energy and concentration and was unable to enjoy them all. Mostly unopened, these group games for adults provide players with the opportunity to sleuth in historic times and romantic locations. They are the perfect entertainment for a dinner party, family reunion or a Sunday morning brunch gathering for you and a few couples skipping church. [Editor’s note: Those were the pastor’s words.]

Retail estimate on the Christie Collection (from book reseller websites): $575
Retail estimate on the games: $250
Total value: $825
