God's Story–Our Story
(September 11–May 4)

We all know some of the stories…Noah’s Ark, Joseph’s beautiful coat and jealous brothers, Samson’s great strength, Jonah’s whale, David’s slingshot which killed Goliath, Daniel’s night in the lion’s den, Jesus’ feeding of the 5,000, or Zaccheus’ climbing the tree. But do you know how they fit together? And more importantly for your daily life, do you have a sense of how your story fits in? I’m convinced that God is part of each of our stories whether we’re aware of God in our lives or not. But our lives can have a stronger sense of meaning and purpose if we know and experience God at work in our lives…if our story fits in with God’s story.

Though they were written over centuries by dozens of authors, the books of the Bible do fit together. They tell the story of how God has been at work in this world from the very beginning to connect and then reconnect the world and all that is in it to God’s very self. This fall we will be embarking on a journey together as we look each week at this grand narrative. Our sermon series is called God’s Story–Our Story, and we will be following the outline Max Lucado and Randy Frazee developed for their church that was subsequently published as The Story, an abridged chronological version of the NIV Bible.

This will be the first time we’ve undertaken a 31-week sermon series, and it will be a church-wide event. Adult Education, Children’s Ministry in Faith Forest, our middle school class and a new Sunday morning class for high schoolers will allow all of us to experience the big picture narrative of scripture together as a community of faith. Even as an abridgement of the Bible, Becka and I won’t be able to cover every verse or even every story. But at the end of the year, we’ll all better understand how the Bible fits together and we’ll know where some of our favorite stories fit in. If you’d like to read along in your own Bible, we’ve prepared a reading list that will be available in the literature racks in the Narthex, or you could buy a copy of The Story and read it as a seamless story with transitions that weave the segments of Scripture together.

As we learn about how God’s story fits together, we’ll also consider our own stories  As we make connections between our own lives and God’s purposes in the world, we’ll be taking an important step together toward fulfilling our mission as a church: Inviting people into a life of meaning and purpose in Christ. This fall is a great opportunity for you to invite a friend to worship with you so they can see how God is active in their own life.

According to His power at work within us…
