Reverend Ken Green, Senior Pastor and Head of Staff

Rev. Green is originally from Seattle, Washington, where he met his wife, Tassie, who is also an ordained minister. They have two children. Ken attended the University of Washington, earning a B.A in Speech Communication in 1984 and a Masters degree emphasizing instructional communication in 1987. Ken graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary with his Masters of Divinity degree in 2001.

Rev. Green comes to First Presbyterian Church of La Grange after serving as the Associate Pastor for Young Families and the Discipleship of Children at the Second Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, a 4,200-member church that is extremely well known and respected within the denomination.

Prior to his ordination, Rev. Green was an employee of The Boeing Co. and a tenured faculty member at Seattle Central Community College, where he taught classes in speech communication. He also has 14 years experience as a lay volunteer at University Presbyterian Church in Seattle, where he served as an Elder, and on many various committees including a Pastor Nominating Committee and a Church Officer Nominating Committee. In addition, he served as a small-group leader and a leadership team facilitator, and he participated in mission trips.

Rev. Green serves as moderator of the session and as head of staff. In addition to preaching, he provides pastoral care for the congregation and assists boards and committees in their ministries. He also works with session on the reevaluation and implementation of the church’s strategic plan.

Reverend Catherine Knott, Interim Associate Pastor of Family Life

Rev. Catherine Knott is a native of Charlotte, NC, and comes from the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago where she served for fifteen months as a Pastoral Resident, which is a part of the Lilly Foundation's Transitions into Ministry program for young and recently ordained ministers.

Catherine is a life long Presbyterian, and was baptized, confirmed, married and ordained all at Myers Park Presbyterian in her hometown of Charlotte.

Catherine received a BA of Arts at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and served as a part time youth director for two area congregations while obtaining her college degree. She received her MDiv at Princeton Theological Seminary. During seminary Catherine received clinical pastoral education training at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC, and served as an intern at a small congregation in Manhattan, NY.

She is married to Jason Knott, whom she met while taking Summer Hebrew in 2003 at Princeton. Jason is a 2004 graduate of Princeton Seminary, and is now a doctoral candidate at Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, IL. His field of expertise is theology, with an emphasis on ethics.

Catherine and Jason have only been married two years, and are parenting a cockatiel by the name of Grendel. Catherine enjoys reading, singing, contra dancing, writing, painting and just about any artistic medium that can be done over a cup of tea or coffee. She also enjoys cooking, and being married to a West Texan, puts a lot of chili peppers in pretty much every meal. She has a terrible addiction to hot salsa, particularly if it's from Sadie's of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Alan Wellman, Director of Music

Alan joined the FPCLG staff in 2003 and directs the Sanctuary Choir for Sunday worship and special services and concerts. Alan also is in charge of our Cherub Choir and NOW Music choir. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Alan is also an accomplished soloist, a gift he readily shares with our congregation.

Doreen Sterba DeZur, Director of Handbell & Youth Choirs

Make a joyful noise to the Lord and Suffer the little children unto me are two verses Doreen lives by. If you have heard the Crusader choir sing, and seen Doreen conduct them, you see her passion and how it inspires our youngest members. Likewise, the beauty of the handbells is unforgettable. You can be a part of the magic - contact her or the church office to attend a bell or Crusader Choir rehearsal.

Henry Sybrandy, Organist

Henry has graced the keyboard at our church for many years. Another staff member with a University of Chicago connection, he works at the U of C administration office, commuting from Hyde Park for rehearsals and services. Henry writes weekly music notes for the Sunday bulletin explaining how the music selected for the service ties to the themes of the sermon, anthem or church calendar.

Beata Kernan, Financial Secretary

Beata came to First Presbyterian Church in January, 1999, from an accounting background with law firms working in the Loop. She likes working with figures. She never had to work with a budget until she came here. Working with the various committees and their accounting needs makes the job very interesting.

She collects horse figurines. Many, many years ago, she had the real thing (a grey half-Arab) and went to horse shows in Illinois and the neighboring states.

Pat Eagan, Property Supervisor

In his role as Property Supervisor, Pat truly is a jack-of-all trades. He is responsible for the maintenance of the church building, grounds and equipment. He makes the walk across the street at all hours to open and close the building. He works closely with the property committee to communicate needs and discuss the allocation of limited dollars for building repairs. He is called upon to help people unload their cars, to help set up the hose for the mother-daughter adventure water night, and a myriad of other jobs that do much to help others. Pat celebrated 30 years with FPCLG in summer of 2006

Gail Patterson, Coordinator for Children's Ministries

She coordinates all of the volunteers and works closely with our Associate Pastor for Family Life, Children's Ministry Moderator and Committee, Curriculum Advisors, and others to offer a great educational experience for our children to grow and learn, and have a lot of fun! Gail and her family have been active members of our church for many years.

Laura Hauser, Church Secretary

Laura is our full-time Church Secretary. She is the person behind the friendly voice answering the church phones. Laura comes to us with over 17 years of experience as a receptionist, paralegal and administrative assistant at a law firm based in Westmont. We are excited that Laura has joined the church staff.
