The Ministry to the Greater Chicago Community

The congregation at First Presbyterian Church commits itself to serving others in our community and around the world. While we set aside between 12-13% of our annual budget for missions, we strive to reach out both near and far with gifts of time, talents, and energy as well. Our far reaching mission projects include:

Approximately half of the money that falls within the Mission and Outreach budget supports projects determined by the General Assembly of the Chicago Presbytery. The Chicago Presbytery funds a variety of worthwhile projects. In addition, FPCLG directly funds or supports the following projects:

Firman House Christmas Party - Annually, we sponsor a Christmas party for preschool children at Chicago's Firman House, a community preschool facility for needy inner-city families. We provide crafts, games, music, entertainment, and a visit by Santa, who distributes gifts collected from our "Giving Trees." Each year, the need increases. Last year the Firman party hosted over 250 children. FPCLG provided gifts for each and celebrated the Christmas season with them. More information...

First to First With Love - Our church has entered into a partnership with the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, a church on the south side that once boasted a membership of 3000+. Today, its membership of 189 boasts a strong commitment to its missions, offering a preschool program, weekly meals for the homeless, a gardening program, and a food pantry. Our support is not measured in terms of dollars, but in providing professional support such as architects, accountants, lawyers, city planning, and facility management and in physical labor as we help make their church more physically attractive to people moving into the area during re-gentrification.

Food for Life - On the third Monday of each month, we gather in our kitchen to cut vegetables, make casseroles and/or sandwiches, and package candy for the Food for Life program at First Presbyterian of Chicago. On the following day, the food is taken to their church where it is heated and served to approximately 200 persons. More information...

Stroller & Coat Drive - Used strollers and miscellaneous baby equipment are colleted and taken to the Rogers Park Presbyterian Church where they are given to needy families. Members are encouraged to scour garage sales, etc. to help with this project. We also collect coats in the autumn for their clothes pantry. FPCLG funds a worker at the Rogers Park Presbyterian Church to keep its food and clothes pantry operating.

Your help in always needed in missions - whether it is in the form of a donation of time, money, physical labor, or a gift.
